Morning Meeting
Each school day will begin with Morning Meeting. This sets a positive tone to our day, increases excitement about learning, improves academic skills and social skills and helps build a strong classroom community.
Morning Meeting usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes per day. We gather in a circle and begin by greeting each other by name, usually in some kind of a game. Your child will hear their name spoken by other children each day in a cheerful and friendly manner.
Next, we have a sharing time where students can share some interesting news with the class. The students listening will learn how to ask appropriate questions in response to what is shared as well as make positive comments on subject as well. When children share, they have a chance to feel that their ideas are valued and that other children in the class care.
After sharing, we will have a group activity for the whole class. We may sing a song, recite a poem, or play a math game. Our calendar time will be incorporated into this activity time. Activity time is to unite the class as a whole group and to teach children how to work together with one goal in mind. Cooperating with one another and solving problems together will carry over into all areas of our classroom.
Finally, we will read announcements and class news. This will help students think about what lies ahead in their day.
Every day, Morning Meeting lets children know that school is a safe place where all children's feelings and ideas are important and will be heard. It gives each child a sense of belonging to our class. As Morning Meeting develops and grows, you will hopefully see some of the benefits in your own child at home!
