During our reading & math blocks, our class participates in Learning Centers. Our learning centers are set up throughout the room where the children can work independently while I am teaching a group at the table. Learning Centers challenge students to make choices, solve problems and work independently or with a buddy. They also engage different learning styles based on the activities. Typically, we have three centers happening at the same time. One is a teacher directed activity, and the other two vary. Some of the favorites include: computer, pattern blocks, sight word Candy Land, sight word scavenger hunt, ABC matching, and building patterns. As the year progresses, more centers will be added to the choices.
The children rotate through the centers so they each experience all activities throughout the day. In a particular center, it is not about the quantity of work that a child produces, but it is about the quality and engagement of the student. I want them to be enjoying themselves, learning and reinforcing independently or with a friend and gaining some practice in a skill that we have already covered in class.
Have a blessed week!
