Each Friday, I will be sending home a folder. Inside the folder will be a book to read and instructions. Basically, you will need to read the book with your child and choose ONE of the several activities in the folder to complete. You will have a week to do this. I chose Friday to hand it out in case you want to work on it over the weekend. You may send in the folder and work whenever it is complete.
Some of the books your child may be able to read to you, while others you will read to them. Maybe you can take turns sometimes. If you are reading to them, see if they can spot sight words or word family words in the book. Always, no matter who is reading, ask questions. Check for basic comprehension and also help your child make connections. For example, if you are reading a story about an ant on a picnic, try to have your child recall a time you took a picnic or a time you saw an ant. Talk about it.
Literature comes alive with connections. Let's build these connections together!
This weekly book project is a trial to see how the children do with it. I'd love your feedback as we venture down this path. Next year, the children will have regular homework in different subjects. I'm trying to prepare them now for a love of reading, good habits and working together at home.
Let me know if you have any questions. I'm looking forward to trying this out with you.
